Thursday 24 October 2013

Wed. Oct 23rd - We are off to a great start!

It was wonderful to meet everyone in person finally after corresponding via email over the summer!

This season our curling complement is made up of students from:
  1. Kars on the Rideau, St. Matthews HS , St. Marks HS, John McCrae Secondary, St. Patrick's HS, St. Joseph HS, Longfield Davidson HS, Canterbury HS, De LaSalle HS, South Carleton HS and Cedarview Middle School.
  2. Grades 7 to 11
  3. 20% of the TFL'rs have been initiated into curling via the school Phys Ed program, while the majority have been in a structured program at local area curling clubs such as Manotick, Navy, Carleton Heights, Cityview.
It was unanimous that for both curlers & fans in the gallery that we are all there to learn something new & have fun!

Team Assignments: will be made up from those in attendance. Every effort will be made to keep teams/pairs together, however sometimes the math just doesn't work. In this instance it will a grand chance to play on a different team just for fun that day.

Starting Wed. Oct 30th:
  •  4pm weekly - 30minutes of coaching on basic delivery techniques or to give the more experienced curler  a pointer to work on - Coach Kent or Coach Chris Y will meet you at the club. Just EMAIL Roz if you plan on coming early so we can be ready for you:
  • Already on the list for 4pm:
                                        Ryan J.
                                        Ryan L.
                                        Cole
  • As is tradition at the beginning of the season, we will have a draw to the button challenge to start our Day 2.
  • Snacks will be provided compliments of Roz & Deb
A big thanks to the parents who stepped up and volunteered to jump right into the snack routine! Last year I went with healthy...however soon realised that crunchy & salty chips were clearly the TFL favourite. Note we are NOT a peanut free environment and for those with food sensitivities please come and see me.

We look forward to another fun & rewarding season full of curling!

Roz & Deb & Kent & Chris I & Chris Y

p.s If you have friends who want to join, it is NOT too late. We are also taking curlers who wish to be listed as a SPARE - that is a curler who can't commit to every week league but would like to be called in to 'fill-in' on a scheduled afternoon away.

Wed. Feb 27th - Lots happening !

TFL and families,

We are in our last month, can you believe it?

Today - Wed. Feb 27th - there's alot happening, here goes...

1. We will have yet another high calibre curling guest, Mary Mattatall who is stopping by  at 5.45pm - 6pm to chat for about 15minutes with TFL about her experiences at the Scotties & answer any questions that our curlers might have.

Who is Mary?

Mary Mattatall has been curling for 25 years, which is pretty good for such a youngster!  She lives in Dartmouth and works for Public Works and Government Services Canada as a Property Manager. Mary has many curling accomplishments: Junior Provincial Champion, 2  Olympic Trials attendances, 2 Canadian Mixed Championships. 3  Mixed Provincial Championships. 5 Provincial Scott Championships. 8 Scott Tournament of Hearts Appearances. Her most memorable Curling Moment was winning the Regional Qualifier to make it to the 1997 Olympic Trials in Calgary.  The ONLY team east of Ottawa to make it to the trials. Other than curling she loves golf and do it yourself projects.

Her favorite saying: "Nothing in life is free.  For all things you must pay.....attention. And IF you pay......attention,  Life will unfold as it should."

2. Manotick Curling Club is hosting its annual cancer fundraiser on March 2nd. The organizing committee is offering many wonderful prizes in their Perky in Pink raffle draw. You get to pick which prize you want to go after:
  • Goldline curling broom - men's
  • Goldline curling broom - women's
  • Sens Tickets (March game date)
  • Golf & Dinner
  • Professional Photo Shoot
Come see Roz  for raffle tickets ($2 x 1, $5 x 3..I think) all proceeds towards a great cause!

3. Early registration for next season 2013/2014. We will have registration forms available for early registration for next season.
So that we can do some planning, we would like to get a good idea of just how many curlers will be returning. We'd like to get the word out to more curlers like YOU who love to curl but didn't know you could here at Manotick! So for any of your friends who register - you will get a free broom head valued at $15. Good to add to your stash of replacement parts for all that sweeping during games/bonspiels.

See you all !

Roz & Deb
