How do I find a replacement or 'spare' to fill in my position?

Q: I have a doctor's appointment on the day my team is playing. How do I find someone to fill in my spot?
A: Curlers are responsible for obtaining their own replacement - called a 'spare'.

Q: When should I contact my 'spare'?
A: This should be done with as much PRIOR notice as possible.

Q: Who should I contact first?
A: Contact your 'spare', in the order below. Remember to let them know:
  • Who you are
  • What position you are playing
  • Which team you are from
  • What date you would like them to 'spare' for you

1. Start with the official 'Spare list', here:

2. Next check Schedule to see which  team does not have a game that week - this is called a 'bye'. Contact any member of that 'bye' team. Contact list will be circulated directly to all the contacts of the TFL.
3. Let Deb, Roz & your skip know that some one else is filling in for you - this is called 'sparing'

Drawmaster Deb - Details for Day 1: Wed. Oct 17th

Hello - All the participants in our new Teen (a.k.a Bantam) Friendly League!

Team contacts:
Please forward this info on to the other members of your team.  If you would like to pass on to me the individual member’s email addresses I would be happy to send out any future emails to your players for you.

Anyone can always check our blog for up-to-date information - http://teenfriendlyleague.blogspot.ca
Day One is fast approaching, October 17, on-ice at 4:30pm and the end time is 6pm.

Curlers Please:
  •  arrive 10 minutes early to gear up and warm up.
  •  bring your curling shoes and broom.
The plan for day one is have a ‘curling carnival day’ and then determine teams for those who signed up individually before playing a quick four end game.

All participants should come to day one.
After that, according to our current enrollment, each team will get a bye every three weeks.

If there is a particular week that is bad for you or your team, tell me and I will try to accommodate you. Also the team on a bye week can provide spares for the other teams. I will send out a schedule after day one and it will be posted on our blog.
See you on Oct. 17!
Your draw master,
Deb Innes

A few words from Manotick CC - Youth Coordinator Chris Innes

Who is ready to sweep hard! Hopefully everyone. Welcome to the Manotick Curling Center Bantam program. My name is Chris Innes and together with my team of instructors we run the Bantam program at the Manotick Curling Center.

Curling for this year will start on Sunday October 14th at 1:30 and run until 3:30. There will be no curling on Sunday October 21st as several of our instructors will be away at a training course.

On October 14th we will be holding our "Bring a friend" session. Bantam curlers are welcome to invite a friend to join them for the afternoon and share some fun and excitement.

Below you will find some of the standard questions we field. Please feel free to email or call me should you have any questions.

See you on the ice.

Lesson Time - Each Sunday morning from 1:30 to 3:30 from late October through March.
Curling Shoes and Broom - All Bantam youth require proper curling shoes and broom. At the Bantam level its about honing the skills and for this the youth need proper equipment. We recommend Goldline Curling on Colonnade Road South or the HogLine at the Ottawa Curling club. Both of these suppliers support our program and in turn we like to support them.
New to Curling - If your youth is new to curling, no worries, we work with youth at every level. If you are new and not sure on your youth's level of commitment, then I would suggest you do not purchase shoes and broom right away. Give it a few months to make sure they are going to stick with the program. We have club brooms that you can use for a period of time. For shoes, a clean pair of sneakers (a pair that have not been worn outside) and a club provided slider will work for the time being.
Ice Temperature - The ice is cold! We recommend youth wear several layers to keep warm. They can always take layers off if they are too warm.
Questions - If you have any questions please give me a call or send me an email.
Competitive vs. Recreational - Our program is run as a recreational program although many of our youth are also on competitive teams.

Program Breakdown - Each week we will work on improving skills and spend some time in a game. There will also be sign up sheets for Bantam Spiels.
